Skincare Ingredients Explained: Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid and More
A plain-English guide to the ingredients you see on every label — what each one does, who it suits and what not to mix.

Product labels are full of names that sound like a chemistry lesson. Once you know a handful of key ingredients, choosing skincare becomes much easier. Here are the most common skincare ingredients explained in plain English.
Hydrators
Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate)
Draws water into the skin and makes it feel plump. Suits all skin types. Apply on slightly damp skin and follow with moisturiser.
Glycerin
A classic, affordable humectant found in many moisturisers and cleansers. Gentle and effective.
Barrier repair
Ceramides
Fats that naturally exist in your skin barrier. Good for dry, sensitive or over-exfoliated skin.
Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)
Soothing and hydrating. Common in products for sensitive skin.
Treatment actives
Niacinamide (vitamin B3)
Helps with oil control, the look of pores, uneven tone and barrier support. Usually well tolerated. Common strengths are 2–10%; higher isn't always better.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and derivatives)
An antioxidant that helps with dullness and uneven tone. Often used in the morning under sunscreen. Store away from light and heat — it can oxidise and turn dark.
Salicylic acid (BHA)
Oil-soluble exfoliant that works inside pores. Good for oily and acne-prone skin. Can be drying — start a few times a week.
Glycolic and lactic acid (AHAs)
Exfoliate the surface for smoother, brighter-looking skin. Lactic acid is usually gentler. Increases sun sensitivity — sunscreen is essential.
Retinol and retinoids
Support smoother texture and fewer clogged pores over time. Use at night, start slowly (two or three nights a week), and always use sunscreen. Not recommended during pregnancy — ask a doctor.

What not to mix (at least at first)
- Retinol + AHAs/BHAs on the same night — can irritate.
- Several new actives at once — you won't know what caused a reaction.
- Strong actives on irritated skin — repair first with a gentle routine.
A simple approach: vitamin C in the morning, one treatment active at night.
How to use this when shopping
- Decide your one main goal (hydration, oil control, brightness).
- Find a product where that ingredient appears high in the list — see how to check cosmetic ingredients.
- Add it to a simple routine — see moisturizer vs face serum and the daily skincare routine.
How to introduce a new active ingredient
- Patch test for 24–48 hours.
- Start slowly — two or three times a week for strong actives like acids or retinol.
- Use a small amount. More product doesn't mean faster results.
- Watch your skin for two weeks. Mild tingling can be normal; burning, redness or peeling means stop.
- Increase gradually if your skin is comfortable.
- Always use sunscreen — many actives make skin more sensitive to the sun.
